Question:
Mix Tramadol With Effexor?
2008-12-29 11:38:35 UTC
Doctor prescribed Tramadol 150mg extended release tabs. I am also on Effexor and have read in some places about Seratonin Syndrome when combining MAOI's and SSRI's. I am aware Tramadol is not an MAOI but it is a bit of an SNRI and Effexor is also an SNRI I believe.

Has anyone taken effexor with tramadol...

Thanks for your help! It's very much appreciated.

Two questions. Was your doctor aware of your taking Effexor prior to proscribing Tramadol? Do you have a seizure disorder?

It is probably safe to take these medications in combination. They have completely different mechanisms of action. While it is true that Effexor is an Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) this is not true about Tramadol. As you correctly stated Tramadol is not a Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). However, it is believed that it can increase the risk of Serotonin syndrome in combination with a SNRI or Selective Serotonin uptake inhibitor (SSRI). Be aware of the signs and symptoms of Serotonin syndrome:

* Cognitive effects: mental confusion, hypomania, hallucinations, agitation, headache, coma.

* Autonomic effects: shivering, sweating, hyperthermia, hypertension, tachycardia, nausea, diarrhea.

* Somatic effects: myoclonus (muscle twitching), hyperreflexia (manifested by clonus), tremor.

In addition Tramadol by itself can lower your seizure threshold if you have a seizure disorder. It is believed that this phenomenon is aggravated by SSRIs.

I am sure that this combination should be fine with most people, but make sure that your doctor is aware of all medications and drugs that you are taking.

Tramadol And Effexor

Tramadol is a strange painkiller, when it first came out, most doctors loved it and hailed it as the best pain relief etc etc. Until they saw the side effects. The private hospital that I worked at last year loved to give it out all the time, along with Digesic, But public hospitals dont give it out much. Ive had tramadol before, here and then, and one time, im not sure if it was the tramal or a virus i picked up. But one time i was going to meet a friend in the city and felt really dizzy on the bus and then nauseated and had to go to the ER and get something for it. They didnt say it was the tramal but they said it can be a side effect, esp when other times ive had it and it was fine. Havent taken it since then, been over 20months or so.

As they are both SNRI's (Tramadol Being a weak SNRI with an affinity for opioid receptors) Im going to advise staying away from that particular combo. Additionally, both drugs lower the seizure threshold, and with Tramadol acting on additional receptors, the outcome could be be unpredictable.

Effexor should be taken with caution when using St John's wort.Effexor may lower the seizure threshold, and co-administration with other drugs that lower the seizure threshold such as bupropion and tramadol should be done with caution and at low doses. Seizures have also anecdotally been reported with combination of Effexor and marijuana.

That's too serious a question to be relying on YA. I'd suggest calling your pharmacist and asking if there is a drug reaction between the two. That's his job.

Call a pharmacy and tell them what you are taking and if you can mix them.

You can also call your doctor.
