Back pain?

I am a 48 year old woman and about a week ago, I woke up with back pain, from mid back down to about where my hips are, over last couple of days it has continued, gotten worse, it hurts to walk or sit completely upright I am forcing myself to do so, I know proper posture is best. It pretty much hurts whether I am active or resting, even sleeping is uncomfortable. I have been resting, taking motrin, Tylenol, meloxicam, muscle relaxer called flexeril ice, heat pad, pillow between knees, I don't remember doing anything to cause this.the most painful area is an area on right side middle back next to spine, it radiates down to top of right butt cheek. I would put this back pain at a 7, definitely a lot of pain. I have strained back before within a few days was resolved. I went to the doctor's for bruised, and seperated rib, very painful even to take a breath I was given meloxicam, told to rest, take deep breaths and give it time to heal, it was a long, painful few weeks. It was complete waste of time and money. Husband wants me to see doctor,, I don't want to, waste time, or money for no help, doctor's are quick to dismiss pain especially in woman. What could be going on, is it worth doctor visit? Sitting in doctor's office would be so uncomfortable to get no help, any suggestions or advice.

exactly, for most such problems, that's what you'll get. drugs instead of real help that corrects the cause. if you want to rule out anything truly requiring medical treatment, such as some cases involving severe spinal pathology, you may wish to visit a medic, but be cautious and get more than one opinion. their opinions often don't agree. (by severe i'm not talking about just commonplace mild to moderate osteoarthritic changes, etc.)having eliminated any thing actually requiring medical intervention, head straight to an hio method chiropractor and have them analyze you for nerve interference and then have them correct the cause.

You MIGHT have sciatica. I've had that, and my pain was somewhat similar to yours. The doctor prescribed Vicodin for pain & Soma for a muscle relaxer. That really helped. I didn't have to go to a specialist, just to my regular family doctor.

If the pain is a 7 than what the hell are you waiting for?You have to force yourself to go to the hospital because time is not on your side when it comes to physical health. Whatever the problem is, you need to catch it early

Yes, it is worth a trip to the doctor. If you have a good doctor who listens to you and addresses your concerns, that is beneficial. If you don't, then get another doctor.

Back Pain

"Did you know?

Back pain is strongly associated with low vitamin D

Back pain has been relieved in 95% of patients after supplementing with vitamin D

Vitamin D treats many types of Chronic Pains

Vitamin D improves bone health, which decreases back problems

(More Back Pain info below)

Magnesium also reduces back pain - by reducing muscle tension and improving bones"

Try pharmacies/supermarkets for the magnesium supplement types at http://www.naturalnews.com/046401_magnesium_dietary_supplements_nutrient_absorption.html

Much less expensive is magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts).

I use 300 mg daily; taking too much has a laxative effect. Pharmacies, health food or vitamin stores, some supermarkets, or Google supplies.

You can also massage a concentrated solution of magnesium sulfate, into the affected area, because it is absorbed directly through the skin (magnesium chloride is better, but more expensive). If it is too painful there, then massaging it in elsewhere can reduce or avoid unwanted laxative effects from oral ingestion.

Re vitamin D; sunlight is free; 100,000 IU capsules are available (Google supplies) which you could take one of, every second week, quite safely. 50,000 IU capsules are at Amazon.com

A good source of vitamin K2 is hard, curd cheese, preferably Edam, Gouda, or Brie.

Tayi is “a young, female, disabled veteran of the US Army” who has “post-traumatic fibromyalgia with fatigue and associated cognitive dysfunctions.” She wrote a great post about Robin Prosser, an activist for medical marijuana legalization in Montana, who committed suicide, and more generally about how it is to live in constant pain.

She writes: “It’s hard to understand, if you’re basically healthy, what it’s like to live with a body that tortures you every second of every day, and to be unable to stop the pain.” Adding that “[m]ost people are able to live imagining that if they were ever a prisoner under torture, they would be able to hold up their head and say, ‘Do your worst, I defy you.’ I used to hold that illusion. I don’t anymore; I know the truth, like Prosser knew it: there are things worse than death.”

Marijuana contains at least 60 chemicals called cannabinoids. Researchers are evaluating how effective some of these cannabinoids might be in controlling symptoms of certain medical conditions. For example:

* THC. An abbreviation for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, THC is the main component responsible for marijuana's mind-altering effect. It also may help treat signs and symptoms such as nausea and vomiting that are associated with a number of medical conditions.

* Cannabinol and cannabidiol. These compounds have some of the properties of THC, but cause less psychoactive effects — the high.

* Dronabinol (Marinol). Dronabinol (dro-NAB-in-ol) is a man-made version of THC available by prescription. It's used to prevent nausea and vomiting after cancer chemotherapy when other medicines for these side effects don't work, and to increase appetite in people with AIDS.

Other medical uses are;

Scientists studying marijuana's potential medical uses have found that it may help treat a variety of conditions.

Nausea

One of THC's medical uses best supported by research is the treatment of nausea. It can improve mild to moderate nausea caused by cancer chemotherapy and help reduce nausea and weight loss in people with AIDS.

Younger people may find marijuana more useful as a treatment for nausea than do older people — who may not tolerate its mind-altering side effects as well. The prescription form, dronabinol, also may produce psychological side effects that make it inappropriate for some older people. Doctors generally prescribe several kinds of newer anti-nausea drugs with fewer side effects before resorting to dronabinol.

Glaucoma

This disease — the third-leading cause of blindness in the United States — is marked by increased pressure in the eyeball, which can lead to vision loss.

In the early 1970s, scientists discovered that smoking marijuana reduced pressure in the eyes. Exactly how the cannabinoids in marijuana produce this effect isn't known. Scientists have discovered CB1 receptors in the eyes, which may provide clues for future research on how marijuana affects glaucoma.

Your doctor can prescribe other medications to treat glaucoma, but these can lose their effectiveness over time. Researchers are working to develop medications containing cannabinoids that can be put directly on the eyes — to avoid the mind-altering side effects and other health consequences of smoking the plant.

Pain

People widely used marijuana for pain relief in the 1800s, and several studies have found that cannabinoids have analgesic effects. In fact, THC may work as well in treating cancer pain as codeine, a mild pain reliever. Cannabinoids also appear to enhance the effects of opiate pain medications to provide pain relief at lower dosages.

Researchers currently are developing new medications based on cannabis to treat pain.

Multiple sclerosis

Research results on the effectiveness of cannabinoids in the treatment of the tremors, muscle spasms and pain of multiple sclerosis (MS) — a disease of the nervous system that can cause muscle pain — are mixed. A 2003 study found that cannabinoids significantly reduced pain in people with multiple sclerosis.

Some scientists feel that more research may show cannabinoids useful in treating MS. Marijuana may protect nerves from the kind of damage that occurs during the disease. They also suggest that animal study results, knowledge of CB1 receptors in the brain and users' reports of decreased symptoms after using marijuana support this possibility. However, others advise caution in using marijuana to treat MS, given the modest therapeutic effects cannabinoids have demonstrated so far and the potential of long-term adverse side effects.

Study Shows Cannabis Spray Helps Ease Chronic Pain

GLASGOW, Scotland (Reuters) - A cannabis spray used under the tongue helps to relieve the suffering of multiple sclerosis patients and people suffering from chronic pain, a British doctor said Monday.

The spray contains extracts from the drug and allows doctors to control dosage effectively and measure the effects. So far the results have been encouraging.

"We are finding it is useful for a lot of patients," Dr. William Notcutt of James Paget Hospital in Great Yarmouth in eastern England told a science conference in Glasgow.

An estimated one person in 12 experience chronic pain.
